What is xG? (Expected Goals)

Expected Goals (xG) and Training at xG Soccer

One of the most advanced metrics in soccer, 'Expected Goals' (xG), is a statistical tool used to evaluate the quality of goal-scoring chances created by a team or player during a match. It measures the likelihood of a shot resulting in a goal, based on factors such as the shot's location, angle, distance from the goal, and whether it was taken with the foot or as a header.

The xG value ranges from 0 to 1, with higher values indicating a greater probability of the shot resulting in a goal. For example, a shot taken close to the goal with a clear angle will have a higher xG value than a shot taken from a longer distance or a difficult angle. A shot with an xG of 0.7 would typically result in 7 goals out of 10, while a shot with an xG of 0.2 would result in 2 goals out of 10. This metric is widely used by analysts and coaches worldwide to assess performance and improve a team or player's ability to create and convert quality scoring opportunities.

At xG Soccer, we integrate this data-informed framework into our technical training programs to help players improve their shooting and finishing abilities. Using xG data from top leagues such as the English Premier League, Spanish La Liga, German Bundesliga, and Major League Soccer (MLS), we design systematic training sessions that reflect the practices of professional clubs and academies.

Our technical training focuses on:

  • Shooting Technique: Exercises that emphasize proper mechanics, striking accuracy, and power to improve finishing consistency.

  • Goal-Scoring Precision: Training players to target high-probability scoring areas based on xG insights.

  • Finishing from Diverse Angles: Practicing finishes from a variety of positions and scenarios to develop technical versatility.

  • Variability and Refinement: High-repetition exercises designed to improve technical execution under game-like conditions.

  •

At xG Soccer, our systematic and technical approach ensures players develop the precision and consistency required to excel in front of goal, mirroring the proven methods of elite soccer programs worldwide.

How xG is Implemented in Professional Soccer Academies

“We work with some more advanced metrics," Cuthbert explains. "This morning we did a session on xG with our U21s. We explained that 0 to 0.1 was a low chance and that 0.3 and above was a big chance."
